Eco Churches

Churches across Stokesley and the surrounding North Yorkshire villages are increasingly embracing the Eco Church initiative, weaving environmental stewardship into the very fabric of their community life. This movement, supported by Climate Action Stokesley and Villages (CASaV), encourages local congregations to look beyond the pulpit and take practical steps toward a net-zero future. From the historic pews of Stokesley to the quiet village chapels, faith communities are auditing their energy use, switching to renewable providers, and reimagining their grounds as “green oases” for local biodiversity.

The impact of these efforts is visible in more than just carbon spreadsheets. Many local churches have achieved Rocha UK Eco Church awards, marking significant milestones in areas like sustainable building management and global engagement. Beyond the physical upgrades, these churches serve as vital hubs for CASaV’s wider mission—hosting sustainable events that address climate change and participating in projects like Churches Count on Nature. By integrating care for the creation into their worship and daily operations, these Eco Churches are demonstrating that local faith action is a powerful catalyst for a more sustainable and resilient North Yorkshire.

The Anglican diocese of York has been launched an e-book to help churches celebrate God’s beautiful world on any Sunday of the year. Choose Life has been written and compiled by Diane Craven and the Diocesan Green Ambassador, the Revd Johannes Nobel. It contains suggestions for prayer and worship, combined with ideas for practical action for creation, during every season of the church year. One of the key ideas is to become an eco church.
