The book to make a difference – A Gift for Conversation – Lets’ discuss Climate Change: Why it matters. What to do about it. By Dr Louis Keal
Are you brave enough to give this book? Because if you are and depending on who you give it to, you can expect challenging discussions and to change people’s views.
Dr Keal calls his book an interactive book, but it is also a book where you put the finishing touches, by adding your own thoughts on climate change, motivations to act and what you are doing into the book, before giving it away to somebody who you struggle to talk about climate change with. So you become an author and as such are open to reviews which may not all be initially positive, but that’s the book’s purpose to promote discussion.
Rather than classifying the book as overly pessimistic (Breaking together) or overly optimistic (Not the end of the world), it is best classified by the 5 key points on page 4, 1. climate change is happening now, 2. we caused it, 3. we’re sure we caused it, 4. it’s bad, 5. There’s still time to act to avoid a terrible future. Dr Keal appreciates that many people find one or all these points difficult to accept, so the book not only provides references, but more interactively suggests topics for discussions between the receiver and the giver (or anybody else). This approach gives other people the chance to go on the journey we have all been on to accept those 5 key points, as such people will develop a more resilient understanding that will allow them to see not just obvious greenwashing, but the more subtle use of topics like energy security to undermine decarbonisation.
While giving this book requires us to be brave, it is perhaps one of the most effective ways in which we can individually change people’s views one person at a time.
You can read the book on this website or even better buy copies to give to people who you need to talk to about climate change – https://www.agiftforconversation.com/.
