In 2025, Dr. Martin Partridge Yorkshire Branch Chair of Butterfly Conservation, led a walk around the floodplain meadow in Great Ayton as part of the Big Butterfly Count, gave a follow-on talk on Butterflies of North Yorkshire at Faceby Village Hall and visited Great Ayton Station’s Wild Space to give advice on management of the picnic area to improve the habitat for butterflies.
Martin has provided some great links with more information on butterflies specifically in North Yorkshire.

Butterfly Conservation – Saving butterflies, moths and our environment
Nationally, many of our butterfly and moth species are in urgent need of help and the situation is no different here in Yorkshire.
Yorkshire hosts threatened species such as Duke of Burgundy, Pearl-bordered Fritillary and the Dark Bordered Beauty which would almost certainly disappear without the support that your membership brings to the organisation.
Please visit our website yorkshirebutterflies.org.uk where you will find information about sites around Yorkshire where you can observe butterflies. For some of these sites there is more detail contained in the Butterfly walks of Yorkshire also on the website. The website also has recent sightings of the butterflies and moths in Yorkshire and information on recording and monitoring.
You can record your Butterfly sightings also on the very handy iRecord Butterflies app. Keep up to date with what’s happening in Yorkshire by joining our Facebook page (BCYorkshire) or by following us on Bluesky @bcyorkshire.bsky.social.
There is a Yorkshire Butterfly Atlas and Yorkshire Moth Atlas, on both of these you can find what is likely to be found near to where you live, along with helpful tips for identification. There is an informative video on how to get the most out of the Butterfly Atlas.
The branch has is own YouTube channel, Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire which has lots of great identification tips for species as well as lots of informtive talks.
There are two additional Facebook sites for the regions of Yorkshire.
Butterflies & Moths, North & East Yorkshire
Butterflies and Moths, South & West Yorkshire
Please note that magazines and annual reports are available to download from the website. You can record your Butterfly sightings also on the very handy iRecord Butterflies app.
